60th Anniversary of Vietnam Institute of Economics: 2020 Performance Reviews and Missions for 2021

The ceremony was held on December 25, 2020 at Vietnam Institute of Economics. Distinguished guests at the ceremony included Dr. Dang Xuan Thanh, Vice Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) and other representatives from VASS departments. From Vietnam Institute of Economics (VIE), there were Assoc. Prof. Bui Quang Tuan, VIE Director; Dr. Le Xuan Sang, VIE Deputy Director; Assoc. Prof. Tran Dinh Thien, VIE Former Director; and all VIE staff.

After the opening speech by Assoc. Prof. Bui Quang Tuan, VIE Director, Dr. le Xuan Sang, VIE Deputy Director made a brief of the VIE 2020 performance reviews and missions for 2021. VIE in 2020, besides the scientific activities, continued to be one among key Vietnamese think tanks with significant contributions to policy advocacy and for the 13th National Party Congress. Dr. Sang also pointed out the shortcomings and limitations of VIE performance and proposed solutions and directions for the institute in the year 2021 thereby.

Assoc. Prof. Bui Quang Tuan also shared his thoughts after Dr’ Sang’s briefing, emphasizing on VIE’s international cooperation activities, particularly in the setting of digital transformation, and towards more cooperation with Vietnamese businesses in the coming time.

Assoc. Prof. Tran Dinh Thien contributed his comments regarding challenges facing the study of social sciences. Form his viewpoint, research in the field, either from VASS or VIE, should be more practical and applicable in order to contribute better for the society and advocacy. VIE in particular needed a strategic plan for improving its academic and research capabilities for advanced development in a near future.

Other participants, including Mr. Tran Xuan Phuong, Head of Administration Division and Mr. Tran Van Hoang, Secretary of VIE Youth Union, also shared their thoughts.

Representing VASS leadership at the ceremony, Dr. Dang Xuan Thanh, VASS Vice President, highly spoke of VIE’s achievements in 2020. He noted also, however, the requirement for VIE to continue strengthening its research capabilities and competitiveness due to strong competition among research institutions and think tanks currently.

Assoc. Prof. Bui Quang Tuan, on behalf of VIE leadership and staff, thanked Dr. Dang Xuan Thanh for his comments and instructions. He agreed that VIE leadership would advance further VIE research performance for better achievements in the years to come.

The year 2020 also marked the VIE 60th anniversary (1960-2020), which was warmly held subsequently with the presence of former VIE leaders and retired staff as well. VIE staff of generations had shared precious memories over the institute’s long development history. The former staff of VIE also expressed their sentiments and encouragements to the VIE’s current generation, wishing that VIE would continue to be one among leading institution of its class to contribution significantly to the country’s development.
