On October 31, 2023, the Vietnam Institute of Economics organized a technical seminar with the topic "Employment and household welfare under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Vietnam: Poverty and inequality simulation". This is a training activity with the participation of a research team from the program "The Impact of COVID-19 on Inclusive Development and Democratic Governance: a Post-Graduation Rapid Assessment pandemic in the Mekong sub-region", implemented by Centre for Analysis and Forecasting, funded by the International Development Research Center (IDRC), and coordinated by the Cambodia Development Resource Institute (CDRI).

Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong (Vietnam Institute of Economics), Dr. Pham Minh Thai (Institute of World Economics and Politics) and PhD. Vu Hoang Dat (Centre for Analysis and Forecasting) presented research findings on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the labor market, household poverty and inequality in Vietnam.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Phuong (Vietnam Institute of Economics) presented the research findings

Experts from the Department of Labor and Population and the Department of Social and Environmental Issues (General Statistics Office) provided technical discussions of simulation exercises based on 02 databases of the Labor Force Survey (LFS) and the Vietnam Household Living Standard Survey (VHLSS), which are representative at the national and sectoral levels.

Dr. Pham Minh Thai (Institute of World Economics and Politics) presented the LFS data processing

Dr. Vu Hoang Dat (Centre for Analysis and Forecasting) presented the VHLSS data processing for household poverty simulation

After a technical training day with 02 data sets, the research team and experts from the General Statistics Office shared a knowledge gap on the labor market with a gender lens, quantitative techniques to simulate the impacts of economic shocks, and a collaboration demand, especially for quarterly assessment for social policy recommendations.
